On the road to 100k

Friday, 9 January 2015

On January 1st, I started the 100k Words in 100 Days Challenge. I did my first of these nearly three years ago. I have yet to make it to 100k. The first time I did alright. I wasn't anywhere close to target, but at least I was writing.

Of course, at the time I was in prep for About.com (which, by the way I didn't get until years later) so I was counting my articles and blog posts, too. That boosted my word count more than anything. After that round I signed up for each challenge and never got past a couple thousand words. Life got in the way.

This time I decided to approach it differently.  I have decided only to count words written for my fiction. So, even though I am writing this post and wrote 810 on an article this week, I am not counting those. I am only counting fiction.

And, you know what?  It's going all right. Last night I hit 10,919. That is more than I have written in months. I have a brand new job. A big one which promises to take up much of my time and leave me exhausted most nights. I don't know if I will come anywhere close to 100k, but I am still giving it a go. I am 9 days in and feel like I have already won.

I am 9 scenes away from writing  'The End' on a WIP that has been stalled out for longer than I care to admit. I'd call that a win.
